World Heritage Center Drum Circle

Located within San Antonio’s newly opened World Heritage Center – a gateway to the UNESCO-designated San Antonio Missions – the Gathering Circle was developed as part of a larger cultural initiative honoring the history, traditions, and indigenous communities connected to the region.
At the heart of the project, Texas Bomanite helped bring to life a deeply symbolic gathering space rooted in indigenous traditions, storytelling, and connection to the land.
Designed in collaboration with artist Adriana Garcia, Dunaway Architecture, mission descendants, and indigenous community members, the Drum Circle serves as both a public art installation and ceremonial gathering place – honoring the interconnectedness of nature, ancestry, and community.
The circular design reflects the belief that “all good happens in a circle,” symbolizing harmony, continuity, and the cyclical nature of life. Through decorative concrete, custom sandblasting, Revealed™ aggregate finishes, and intricate stencil work, Texas Bomanite transformed these stories into a permanent architectural experience.

Storytelling Through Decorative Concrete

Every portion of the installation was intentionally designed to carry meaning through texture, color, and form. At the center of the installation sits Mother Earth, represented by a custom turtle motif facing the rising sun and surrounded by the phases of the moon – reminders of humanity’s relationship to the rhythms and cycles of life.

The turtle itself was created using a custom mold fabricated by Bomanite with Bomanite Revealed™ blended with polished jade aggregate, Bomanite Integral Color, color-matched Bomanite Color Hardeners, custom shell stencils, and heavy sandblast exposure to create depth and movement throughout the piece.

Surrounding the turtle, custom moon phases were formed using Alloy®-colored concrete with hand-inlaid black and white granite pieces, while the rising sun was created using Southern Clay integral color, broadcast white aggregate, and custom stencil sandblasting to achieve a radiant exposed finish.

Representing the Four Directions & Seasons

The larger Gathering Circle honors the four cardinal directions – East, South, West, and North – represented through color and seasonal imagery.
Within each direction, a mesquite tree appears in a different phase of life, symbolizing resilience, renewal, and the human journey through time. Native to the region, the mesquite tree was intentionally selected for its endurance in the South Texas climate and its historic role as a source of shade, nourishment, and shelter.
Texas Bomanite executed each seasonal section with distinct integral colors, custom color hardeners, surface retarders, and heavy sandblast techniques to create contrast and texture throughout the circle:
  • Spring in Metallic Gray
  • Summer in Golden Beige
  • Autumn in Winter Rose
  • Winter in Stone Gray
Flowing throughout the installation, Revealed™ aggregate walking paths symbolize the rivers that have historically connected the people, plants, and wildlife of the region. The pathways guide visitors into the space from every direction, reinforcing the circle’s message of gathering, welcome, and shared experience.

Decorative Concrete Scope & Custom Finishes

The World Heritage Center Drum Circle required a highly customized decorative concrete scope combining Revealed™ aggregate, integral color, Alloy® finishes, stencil sandblasting, exposed pebble detailing, and hand-inlaid elements throughout the installation.

At the center of the design, the turtle motif was constructed using a custom turtle mold spanning 32 square feet of Revealed™ concrete. The installation utilized Bomanite Revealed™ colored in Prairie Beige with polished jade pebbles ranging from 3/8” to 5/8”. Custom turtle shell stencils, Bomanite Color Hardener in Prairie Beige, 01 etch finishing, and heavy sandblasting created layered depth and texture across the surface.

The surrounding cloud elements incorporated a Revealed™ white base with snow white 3/8” pebbles and Bomanite Color Hardener in Metallic Gray. Custom cloud stencils were sandblasted to selectively expose the white aggregate beneath, creating contrast and movement within the imagery.

The moon phases were formed using a custom Alloy® finish with Bomanite Color Hardener in Cobble Gray and featured fifteen custom-cut 1.25” black and white granite inlays representing the lunar cycle.

The sun element utilized Bomanite Integral Color in Southern Clay with broadcast snow white aggregate at one pound per square foot. Custom color hardeners, stencil detailing, 01 etch finishing, and heavy sandblast exposure created a radiant textured finish surrounding the central imagery.

Each of the four seasonal quadrants was individually color matched and sandblasted to reinforce the visual transition through the cycle of life:

  • Spring featured Bomanite Integral Color in Metallic Gray with matching Bomanite Color Hardener, 01 Topcast® surface retarder, and custom sandblast stencil detailing.
  • Summer utilized Bomanite Integral Color in Golden Beige with Bomanite Color Hardener in Horizon Beige and heavily exposed sandblast finishes.
  • Autumn incorporated Bomanite Integral Color in Winter Rose with Bomanite Color Hardener in Red Rose and custom stencil sandblasting.
  • Winter featured Bomanite Integral Color in Stone Gray paired with Bomanite Color Hardener in Thunder Gray and exposed textured detailing.

The Revealed™ aggregate walking paths extended throughout the installation using a white base colored in Prairie Beige with polished jade pebbles and heavy 100-etch exposure.

Borders surrounding the circle utilized Revealed™ Prairie Beige concrete with limestone aggregate, troweled 01 etch finishes, and custom Micro-Top® directional arrows integrated throughout the design.

At the center of the gathering space, the Drum Circle itself was completed using Micro-Top® ST, while the outer ring and surrounding walkways incorporated over 350 square feet of ½” Revealed™ concrete with limestone aggregate and 01 etch finishing.

Honoring Heritage Through Public Space Design

Following the dedication of the World Heritage Center in early 2025, the Gathering Circle now serves as a permanent cultural landmark and ceremonial gathering space for residents and visitors alike.
More than decorative concrete, the World Heritage Center Drum Circle stands as a lasting cultural installation – one that honors indigenous voices, celebrates community heritage, and demonstrates how craftsmanship and design can come together to create meaningful public spaces.
This project reflects the power of decorative concrete not only as a finish material, but as a medium for storytelling, culture, and human connection.
