Located within San Antonio’s World Heritage Center – a gateway to the UNESCO-designated San Antonio Missions – the Gathering Circle was created to honor the indigenous communities, traditions, and stories deeply connected to the region.
Designed in collaboration with artist Adriana Garcia, mission descendants, and indigenous community members, the installation reflects the belief that “all good happens in a circle” – symbolizing harmony, continuity, and the interconnectedness of life.
At the center of the design sits Mother Earth, represented by a custom turtle motif facing the rising sun and surrounded by the phases of the moon. In indigenous tradition, the turtle symbolizes life, grounding, resilience, and humanity’s relationship to the earth and natural cycles.
Texas Bomanite brought this symbolism to life through a highly customized decorative concrete installation combining revealed aggregate, exposed pebble finishes, hand-cut granite inlays, and precision sandblasting.
The 32-square-foot turtle centerpiece was constructed using a custom mold with polished jade pebble aggregate, Prairie Beige color hardeners, custom shell stencils, and heavy sandblast exposure to create layered depth and movement throughout the design. Surrounding moon phases incorporated fifteen custom-cut black and white granite inlays, while the rising sun utilized Southern Clay integral color, exposed white aggregate, and custom stencil detailing.
Throughout the larger Gathering Circle, the four cardinal directions and seasons were represented through custom integral colors, exposed aggregate pathways, and heavily sandblasted seasonal imagery – reinforcing the project’s themes of renewal, connection, and the cyclical nature of life.
More than decorative concrete, the installation stands as a permanent cultural landmark demonstrating how craftsmanship, storytelling, and public space design can come together to create something deeply meaningful for the community.
