Gus Almquist Middle School

The school’s courtyard has been transformed into a cosmic experience with a winding concrete pathway that mirrors the solar system. This artistic concrete work not only adds beauty but also offers a unique, educational experience for students and staff alike.

A Celestial Pathway Through the School Courtyard

At the center of this transformation is a meticulously designed, planetary-inspired pathway winding throughout the front courtyard. Spanning more than 2,800 square feet, the courtyard invites visitors to explore the cosmos beneath their feet:

• 810 square feet of ‘Soapstone’ mimics the surface of rugged moons and distant planets.
• 910 square feet of ‘Harvest Wheat’ creates a warm, inviting atmosphere, much like the radiant surface of a sunny planet.
• 1,155 square feet of ‘Revealed’ with dark blue, teal, and dark green glass inclusions resemble the endless depth of the universe, drawing parallels to stars and distant galaxies.

Learning from the Ground Up

This unique concrete design goes beyond aesthetics, offering an engaging educational experience. The planetary theme serves as an educational tool for students, sparking curiosity about space and the universe, while the vibrant colors and textures create an immersive atmosphere that supports learning.
